FOX Gives 'John Doe' Time to Grow

"John Doe" will have at least nine more weeks to figure out who he is.

Although the freshman drama has struggled somewhat in the ratings -- owing partly to its Friday-night timeslot and a weak lead-in from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" -- FOX likes the show enough that it has picked up "Doe" for a full season. Its situation is similar to that of "Fastlane," which was also picked up this week.

In its seven airings thus far, "John Doe" has averaged just under 7 million viewers -- not great numbers, but not bad either given that Friday is one of the lightest TV-viewing nights of the week and that its lead-in, "Firefly," is also struggling, averaging only about 5 million viewers.

FOX is no doubt hoping that "John Doe" will follow the same path as "The X-Files," which debuted to mediocre ratings on Friday nights and then grew into a cult hit and finally a mainstream success.

Australian actor Dominic Purcell stars as Doe, a man who wakes up alone and naked on an island near Seattle knowing everything about the world except who he is. After making his way to the city, he helps a pair of skeptical detectives (Jayne Brook and John Marshall Jones) with their cases while searching for clues to his identity.

"John Doe" and "Fastlane" are the first of FOX's new series to be picked up. A network spokesman tells Zap2it that decisions should come soon on "Firefly" and comedy "Cedric the Entertainer Presents."
